Created and compered by Jess Green, Find the Right Words is now firmly established as one of Leicester’s best spoken word and rap nights. The show includes two nationally acclaimed headline acts, ten open mic spots (sign ups from 7.30pm) and the increasingly sought after speed poet spot.
With past headliners including Hollie McNish, Buddy Wakefield, Jackie Hagan, Mark Grist, Harry Baker and Megan Beech, Jess makes sure you get to hear the UK’s top performance poets making the biggest noise in spoken word. The headliners this month are:-
Gemma Baker – Grimsby born and Lincoln dwelling, she produces three poetry events in Lincoln, including the WORD theatre. She was a participant in the award-winning BBC Local Radio/National Poetry Day project in 2016, and one of 30 poets to perform at the Edinburgh BBC Slam in 2017. Gemma was also a finalist in the UK wide competition Poetry Rivals in the same year. The Falling Architecture of Reality was Gemma’s first published poetry collection, released for a limited period. Like many, she feels poetry is a means to connect people, to facilitate growth and change, and to have a damn good time. She is not afraid to talk honestly about life, and does so with humility and humour.
Jackie Hagan – Has a council estate heart, a jumble soul, cut her and she bleeds hummus. She won multiple awards for her first solo show Some People Have Too Many Legs in 2015 (she is an amputee), the following show, a play Cosmic Scallies co-produced by Graeae Theatre and The Royal Exchange last year. Jackie has just premiered her new solo show This is not a Safe Space for which she interviewed 80 disabled and working class people who’s lives are insecure. She was short listed for her next show, a live installation We Want To Make You Happy is currently working with Hat Trick productions on a sitcom based on her hometown Skem. She received a Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowship in 2017. She is produced by Big Feast. (Jackie Hagan replaces Rachel Long who can no longer perform on this night).
