Created and compered by JESS GREEN, Find the Right Words is now firmly established as one of Leicester’s best spoken word and rap nights, which includes two nationally acclaimed headline acts, ten open mic spots (sign ups from 7.00pm) and the increasingly sought after speed poet spot.
The show was nominated for the SABOTEUR AWARDS in 2018 and Jess won the BBC EDINBURGH FRINGE SLAM the same year. With the support of the never knowingly mainstream BURNING EYE BOOKS, Jess makes sure you get to hear the UK’s top performance poets making the biggest noise in spoken word. The headliners this month are:-
Clive Birnie – Poet-artist-printmaker who works in both text and visual media. He finds inspiration at a place where poetry and art collide into something which gets called text-based-art but sometimes he types up the results as text only poems and reads them to audiences. His latest book is Palimpsest published as part of Verve Poetry Press’s experimental pamphlet series (for which they received the 2019 the Michael Marks Publisher’s Award). Palimpsest explores a near future where mundane meets magical, truth blurs into fiction and digital and analogue collide. It follows an anti-superhero-assasin in whose steps we follow as she emerges from a collage of fractured narratives and cinematic dispatches from a dark and murderous hinterland.
Louise Fazackerley – Fresh from supporting punk legend Dr. John Cooper Clarke. With work rooted in word-witchery and the working class, Louise is exploring the synergy between poetry and movement in a way that makes the ugly beautiful and the mundane fantastical. Winner of BBC Radio 3 New Voices and European Slam Finalist, Louise is excited to share her new genre- distorting, darkly humorous dystopian book The Lolitas.
